IT'S TIME TO RECONSIDER
The Supreme Court has become the rubber stamp for regressive legislation; denying underrepresented voters of their constitutional rights, and women of their reproductive rights, while opening the door to unlimited money flowing into politics. Dark money has commoditized representation and strangled social investment.
Money is in politics because it buys influence. It is deeply rooted in the intoxication of wealth and power. Without the guardrails of social responsibility, capitalism has broken politics and is endangering our society. Wealth and power at all cost, has silenced the voices and ambition of millions who are now excluded from chasing the American Dream. We’re told “we can't afford to burden our children with reckless spending on social investment" while also giving away trillions in tax giveaways and corporate welfare.
Building a New System
America’s problems are structural, not superficial. If we blame the current political climate on Trump, our failure of imagination may be our biggest downfall. In the ultimate sleight of hand, Republicans turn our outrage to Trump while in the background the dirty work is happening. Republicans have spent decades taking control of state legislatures where instead of voters choosing their representatives, Republicans can choose their voters. It's no exaggeration to say, America is now on the road to authoritarian rule.
The time has come to build a new system, not based on fear, but based on hope, decency and integrity. One not driven by money or political connections, but rather with a focus on the people and that leaves no American behind. What the right calls socialism we call social responsibility and we will wear it as a badge of honor.
John Lewis embodied the ideals we should embrace. He famously said "Nothing can stop the power of a committed and determined people to make a difference in our society. Why? Because human beings are the most dynamic link to the divine on this planet." His words not only touch the soul of anyone dedicated to the preservation of democracy they are prophetic in their intent. "Take a long, hard look down the road you will have to travel once you have made a commitment to work for change. Know that this transformation will not happen right away. Change often takes time. It rarely happens all at once. In the movement, we didn't know how history would play itself out. When we were getting arrested and waiting in jail or standing in unmovable lines on the courthouse steps, we didn’t know what would happen, but we knew it had to happen."
Leaders inspire. Their words become the rallying cry for future generations and so it is, Dems For Action will follow the guidance and inspiration of this legend of our time. “We the people,” must not be confined to a poster or bumper sticker, rather it must be front and center of a new ambition to ensure that every voice is heard.
Yes We Can
In 2008 Barack Obama coined the historic phrase "Yes We Can" - at Dems for Action we reply with "Now We Will."
The words in our official launch video are taken from Obama's 2008 inaugural address. They are as relevant today as they were when they were spoken to a nation filled with hope and ambition for the future.
Obama was the best opportunity America has had in generations to effect real social change. McConnell was successful in putting a stranglehold on his presidency and in denying him a Supreme Court seat, but we've seen the potential of America, and we're ready to come together and create a country that works for everyone.

It is time to shake things up and develop new political talent that understands the challenges in America because they’ve lived them.
